With the Vienna Classic Concerts, the Vienna Residence Orchestra (WRO) celebrates classical music in Vienna.

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart – 270th Anniversary
In 2026, Vienna celebrates a special milestone: the 270th birthday of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Born on January 27, 1756, the “child prodigy” shaped Viennese Classicism and made Vienna the world capital of music. His musical legacy is unsurpassed in its diversity.
From the elegance of “Eine kleine Nachtmusik” to the dramatic sounds of his “Requiem” – Mozart’s work has touched every facet of the human soul for centuries.
… and 245 Years of “Viennese Freedom”
In addition to Mozart’s birthday, we celebrate another significant anniversary in 2026: 245 years of “Viennese Freedom.” In 1781, Mozart took the risky step of breaking with the Archbishop of Salzburg to live in Vienna as one of history’s first freelance artists.
Without this courageous independence, his greatest successes might never have been realized. During his years in Vienna, he created masterpieces such as “The Marriage of Figaro,” “Don Giovanni,” and “The Magic Flute,” which are still performed at major opera houses worldwide.

From 1770 onwards, a very specific style of music developed, especially in Vienna, which we now call Viennese Classicism.
Three great names stand for this epoch: Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven.
At that time, Vienna was THE center for composers of classical music and some of the greatest works by important musicians were created there. Viennese Classicism was a kind of compositional retrospective on the Baroque period.
The composers revived some techniques and compositional processes from the Baroque period, e.g. the broken instrumentation. Here individual instruments (especially in orchestral music) like to detach themselves from the melody, which creates a new timbre, while the melody as a whole is retained.
The Vienna Residence Orchestra has set itself the task of performing the works of Viennese Classicism to the highest perfection, while still staging them in an accessible manner.
Beethoven and Mozart, true representatives of Viennese classicism, are joined by other well-known composers in the program of our Vienna Classic Concerts. The common thread that runs through the varied program is that they all have strong ties to Vienna. And all have enriched our lives with wonderful classical music.
Most know Mozart, Strauss, Beethoven and/or Vivaldi. (And if you’re not sure if you know a piece by at least one of these names, you’ve certainly already heard several well-known works by them)
With Brahms and Lehár it gets more difficult and many may not know Schubert. That is why we at the Vienna Residence Orchestra have created a short overview of the composers of our Vienna Classical Concerts:
