Whether waltz, serenade, or symphony—you’ll find what makes music truly worth listening to here. This month, we turn our spotlight on a genuine classic that delights audiences around the world: the Radetzky March by Johann Strauss (Senior).

Origin: A March for the Field Marshal

The Radetzky March was composed in 1848 by Johann Strauss Sr.. It was a time of great political upheaval in Europe, known as the liberal revolutions. In this context, Strauss honored the Austrian Field Marshal Joseph Radetzky von Radetz, who had led the imperial troops to victories over the Sardinian–Piedmontese army at the battles of Custoza and Novara.

The premiere took place on August 31, 1848, in Vienna and was a triumphant success. Radetzky himself was in attendance, and legend has it that the soldiers and officers in the audience spontaneously stood and stamped their feet in time with the march—a tradition that continues to this day at the Vienna Philharmonic’s New Year’s Concert!

What makes the Radetzky March so special?

The Radetzky March is a prime example of a that simultaneously features elegant Viennese melody. Its impact relies on several musical elements:

Memorable melody: The main theme is instantly recognizable and distinctive. It is rhythmically precise and sticks in the ear.

Clear structure: The march follows the classic march form, with recurring themes and a contrasting trio section. This clarity makes it easily accessible.

Dynamics: Strauss masterfully plays with volume and orchestration. The shifts between brass, woodwinds, and strings create a festive yet powerful atmosphere.
