The Museum of Military History was the first real museum building in Vienna. It was built by Theophil Freiherr von Hansen in the Moorish-Byzantine style, with a sweeping dome. A photo cannot fully reflect the fascination of the Hall of Fame inside. You have to stand in the hall and let the architectural splendour of the room affect you.
With this building, von Hansen was still a major representative of late Romanticism, and used a mixed Byzantine style. In the following years, he developed the famous Viennese style of Historicism with the clear and austere lines of the Renaissance. The collections of this, the most important historical museum in Europe, range from the 16th to the 20th century. The history of the Hapsburg Monarchy from the end of the 16th century to 1918, and the fate of Austria from the fall of the monarchy until 1945 are shown in five major sections.
