1990

The Vienna Residence Orchestra was founded in 1990 by the pianist and conductor Paul Moser and his wife, the singer Sylvia Moser. The orchestra quickly grew in size and fame in its early years, and was soon invited to tours around the world.

1999

In 1999, the Vienna Residence Orchestra was one of the first orchestras in Vienna to establish a daily concert series of classical music in the Palais Liechtenstein. For 30 years now, specially designed programs have been presented with a sophisticated feel for the audience.

2014

In 2014, the Vienna Hofburg Orchestra joined the musical family. The eventful history of the Vienna Residence Orchestra can be found on our “History” page.

Today

Today the orchestra performs the concert series “Vienna Classic Concerts” in the baroque Palais Auersperg, the Vienna Stock Exchange and other historic palaces in the heart of Vienna.

There, an ensemble from our family of musicians will accompany you on a journey through Vienna and the history of its composers with their most important works.

The Vienna Classic Concerts celebrate several anniversaries
2023

In 2023 the Vienna Classic Concerts will celebrate a number of anniversaries of some composers who played a big part in the history of classical music in Vienna.

Franz Schubert died 195 years ago on November 19th. 1828 at the young age of 31 in Vienna. His most famous works include the “Unfinished Symphony” and his more than 600 “Lieder” (art songs).
Although Schubert worked in the tradition of Viennese Classicism, he is also considered, alongside Beethoven, to be the founder of romantic music in the German-speaking world.

Antonio Vivaldi was born 345 years ago on March 4th, 1678 in Venice. After his death in Vienna in 1741, Vivaldi’s music was largely forgotten before being rediscovered in the mid-20th century.
Today, Vivaldi is considered one of the greatest baroque composers, and his best-known work, The Four Seasons, is one of the masterpieces of classical music.
Depending on the time of year, you will hear a sentence from the appropriate “season” in the Vienna Classic Concerts.

On May 7, 1833, 190 years ago, Johannes Brahms was born in Hamburg. He is still considered one of the most important composers in music history. His music is characterized by its complexity and emotional depth. Johannes Brahms lived in Vienna from 1872, where he also died in 1897. The Vienna Classic Concerts regularly play his “Hungarian Dances”.

What is Viennese Classicism?

From 1770 onwards, a very specific style of music developed, especially in Vienna, which we now call Viennese Classicism.
Three great names stand for this epoch: Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven.

At that time, Vienna was THE center for composers of classical music and some of the greatest works by important musicians were created there. Viennese Classicism was a kind of compositional retrospective on the Baroque period.

The composers revived some techniques and compositional processes from the Baroque period, e.g. the broken instrumentation. Here individual instruments (especially in orchestral music) like to detach themselves from the melody, which creates a new timbre, while the melody as a whole is retained.

The Vienna Residence Orchestra has set itself the task of performing the works of Viennese Classicism to the highest perfection, while still staging them in an accessible manner.

Other composers of our concerts
and their most famous works

Beethoven and Mozart, true representatives of Viennese classicism, are joined by other well-known composers in the program of our Vienna Classic Concerts. The common thread that runs through the varied program is that they all have strong ties to Vienna. And all have enriched our lives with wonderful classical music.

Most know Mozart, Strauss, Beethoven and/or Vivaldi. (And if you’re not sure if you know a piece by at least one of these names, you’ve certainly already heard several well-known works by them)

With Brahms and Lehár it gets more difficult and many may not know Schubert. That is why we at the Vienna Residence Orchestra have created a short overview of the composers of our Vienna Classical Concerts:

Danube Cruise brought us to Vienna so we just had to do a concert. Enjoyed every single moment of this “packaged for the tourist” delight. What an amazing sound from just 3 violins, a cello, double bass, piano and flute plus 2 dancers and 2 singers. Worth every cent - plus a complementary glass of sparkling wine in the interval. Highly recommend.

Must do while in Vienna. Sure it's a bit touristy, but the music of Mozart should be heard while in Austria!

I am surprised that this event got some low reviews. First of all, you must understand what you are going to experience. This is a small chamber Orchestra with a huge sound. The acoustics in this room are exquisite. All of the performers are above average to outstanding. This concert caters to tourists because you are not paying a ridiculous price to see a show at the opera house. You do not have to dress up in your best suits and dresses. The time of the show is a manageable timeframe even for children. You are going to get a very good sample of musical culture of Vienna. Mozart, Strauss, etc. This show is very casual it caters to the casual listener.Back when Mozart was performing here in Vienna, he often performed to small intimate groups. That is what this is.I think that if you go into this with the right state of mind, you will enjoy it immensely.
